Why grab bars matter
The bathroom is where most falls at home happen. Wet tile, stepping over a tub edge, and getting up from a low toilet are hard on balance. A grab bar in the right spot is one of the simplest, cheapest safety upgrades there is. It's also why adult children often book this for their parents.

Installed to hold real weight
A grab bar has to hold a person's full weight if they slip, so how it's anchored matters more than the bar itself. Towel bars and suction-cup bars are not safety equipment.
- Bars are fastened into wall studs wherever possible
- Where there's no stud, Sal uses heavy-duty anchors rated for grab bars
- Tile is drilled with the right bit, and holes are sealed with silicone to keep water out of the wall
- Fibreglass and acrylic tub surrounds need special anchors. Sal will check yours first.
Where to put them
Every person and bathroom is different, so placement is planned with whoever will use the bars. Common spots include:
- A vertical bar at the tub or shower entrance, for stepping in and out
- A horizontal or angled bar on the long tub wall. Horizontal bars are commonly placed about 33–36 inches from the floor.
- Beside the toilet, for sitting down and standing up
Sal can also install hand-held shower heads, raised toilet seats with arms, and stair railings, and fix loose railings elsewhere in the house.
What grab bar installation costs
Installing one or two bars usually fits inside the $150 two-hour minimum, plus the cost of the bars. Use the extra time for a second bathroom or a railing. You can buy the bars yourself, or Sal can pick up good-quality stainless bars and add them to the invoice.
Seniors aged 65 and over may be able to claim part of the cost under the federal Home Accessibility Tax Credit. Keep your invoice, and check with your tax preparer.
Signs it's time for grab bars
You don't need to wait for a fall. It's worth adding grab bars if anyone in the house holds onto the towel bar, the sink or the shower door for balance; finds it hard to step over the tub edge; needs a push to get up from the toilet; or is coming home after surgery or a hospital stay. Installing them before they're needed is easier and much safer than after a fall.
