Grab Bars for Seniors: A Practical Guide

Where grab bars should go, how they need to be installed to actually hold someone, and what it costs in Ottawa.

Why grab bars are worth it

The bathroom is where many falls at home happen. Wet floors, stepping over a tub edge, and getting up from a low toilet all test your balance. A properly installed grab bar is one of the cheapest, simplest ways to make a bathroom safer, and it lets older adults stay independent in their own homes for longer.

Signs it's time

  • Someone grabs the towel bar, sink or shower door for balance
  • Stepping in and out of the tub feels unsteady
  • Getting up from the toilet takes effort or a push
  • Someone is coming home after surgery or a hospital stay

Installing bars before they're needed is much easier, and safer, than after a fall.

Where to put them

  • At the tub or shower entrance: a vertical bar to hold while stepping in and out.
  • On the long tub or shower wall: a horizontal or angled bar. Horizontal bars are commonly placed about 33–36 inches from the floor.
  • Beside the toilet: for sitting down and standing up.

The right spot depends on the person's height and how they move, so it's best to plan placement with the person who'll use them.

Anchoring is what matters

A grab bar has to hold someone's full weight if they slip. That means it must be fastened into wall studs, or into heavy-duty anchors made for grab bars. A towel bar or a suction-cup bar is not safety equipment. On tile, holes are drilled carefully and sealed so water can't get behind the wall. Fibreglass and acrylic tub surrounds need special anchors.

What it costs in Ottawa

With Sal's Handyman Services, installing one or two grab bars usually fits inside the $150 base rate, which covers the first two hours on site, plus the cost of the bars. Use the remaining time for a second bathroom, a stair railing, or a hand-held shower head.

Seniors aged 65 and over may be able to claim part of the cost of home accessibility upgrades under the federal Home Accessibility Tax Credit. Keep your invoice, and check with your tax preparer.

Booking for a parent

Many grab bar jobs are booked by adult children for their parents. You can arrange it by text, and Sal will plan the placement with your parents directly. See the grab bar installation page for more.
